Hysterectomy refers to removal of the uterus. It can total (removal of the uterus and cervix) or subtotal (removal of the uterus only). It can include removal of the ovaries and/or tubes (salpingectomy and oophorectomy). Hysterectomy is often performed for fibroid tumors, pain or bleeding that doesn't respond to medical treatment of certain types of gyncologic cancers.
